The 19-year-old returned to action at the start of this year and has since made an astounding impact.

Wirtz has bagged two goals and six assists in all competitions, playing a huge part in Leverkusen’s resurgence under Xabi Alonso.

He has helped Leverkusen advance to the quarter-finals of the Europa League and also impressed in the massive league win over Bayern Munich last weekend.

Wirtz’s rich vein of form has had European giants knocking on his door again, and Plettenberg has offered a huge transfer update.

Barca have already contacted Wirtz’s entourage to reveal their interest, while Bayern are also monitoring his progress.

However, the Sky Germany reporter has poured cold water on the chances of the German teenager’s departure, adding that Wirtz is not planning to leave Die Werkself before the 2024 European Championships.

The former Koln youth product has a contract until 2027 at the Bay Arena, meaning an exorbitant transfer fee will be required to sign him this summer.

Wirtz’s focus will be helping Leverkusen finish inside the European places and lead them to the Europa League glory. They are set to face Union Saint-Gilloise in the quarter-finals.

He has also been called up by German national team head coach Hansi Flick for the upcoming friendlies against Peru and Belgium.
