According to Anfield Central, Barcelona are one of several clubs maintaining contact with Liverpool over a possible signing of Naby Keita. The Catalan club’s head coach Ronald Koeman has been scanning the transfer market for a physical presence in midfield for some time, and Keita who is young and in his prime seems to be one of several options considered by the Dutchman and his managerial team.

The Guinean has had a very tough time with Liverpool, struggling with constant injuries throughout the year. When he was bought, Keita was a bright prospect in Europe, who was expected to fulfil a great role in the Reds’ midfield. However, injuries have seriously prohibited the 26-year-old from progressing as a footballer.

Additionally, it seems that Barça are looking to offload Carles Aleña, Matheus Fernandes, and Miralem Pjanic from their midfield roster. Therefore, the club may well be looking for an additional midfielder for squad depth.

Nonetheless, the reliability of such a report can be questioned, as it seems highly unlikely that the Garnet and the Blue will be considering Keita as an option to bring in. With a phenomenal midfield three of Sergio Busquets, Pedri, and Frenkie de Jong, as well as the bench options of Riqui Puig, Ilaix Moriba, and potentially even Nico Gonzalez next season, a signing like Keita seems totally redundant for the club.

It will not only halt the progress of some very talented youngsters at the club, and many believe that the Liverpool midfielder is nowhere near the gold standard that must be met by Barça’s midfielders.

Whether the club actually pursue this signing remains to be seen. However, one can confidently say that the Blaugranas have far better options both in their roster as well as on the transfer market. Keita would not be the most sensible transfer at this point in time.
