The name of Wesley Dual da Rocha has been doing rounds within the Barcelona youth circuit for all the right reasons.
The 16-year-old has characteristics similar to former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante and more importantly, he recently signed his renewal with the team until 2025.
The Spanish U-19 international is from the same batch as Lamine Yamal within the youth setup he has garnered a reputation for being someone who is absolutely top-notch in his ball recovery and his tactical awareness.
The 16-year-old joined Barcelona in 2019 and speaking in an interview with Alqahera News, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, he shed light on several aspects, including the offers he has received so far and his thoughts on Real Madrid.
“Being a Barcelona player for many years, I don’t think I can play for Real Madrid, but I don’t deny that it is one of the best football clubs in the world,” said the youngster.
The youngster explained his mixed heritage and said that during his brief Barcelona stint, he has received several offers.
“I have a Spanish father and a Brazilian mother. I have dual Spanish and Brazilian nationality. I started at Barcelona as a midfielder, I am currently in the under-19 team and was called up to represent the Spanish team.
“I received several offers from important clubs, but my dream is to be able to reach the first team and succeed at Barcelona. I am very proud and grateful to be part of this club.
“Everyone in the reserve team works hard, waiting for Xavi’s call-up, and of course, I am one of them. We have to be prepared because getting to the top will not be easy,” he said.
When asked who he idolises, he mentioned four Barcelona legends and a current player, saying: “I have always liked Sergio Busquets, Andrés Iniesta, Messi, Neymar, and Pedri.”
“I would like to play alongside players like Frenkie de Jong and Pedri,” he added.
Coming from the same batch as Yamal, it was obvious that he had questions about the current first-team player. So when asked about the forward’s comparisons with Messi, he said,
“Yes, we have been together in the academy for a long time, since we were roommates at La Masia. He is a player of high level and special potential and will achieve many good things, but Messi is still Messi, he is unique.”
When asked if he ever got the chance to meet Messi, he said, “It was a pleasure to meet him and take photos with him during his time at the club. His advice to me is the same that he gives to all the academy players, which is to continue working hard.”
Lastly, while his thoughts about Real Madrid are clear, he did admit that Vinicius Jr is his favourite player from Los Blancos.
