Barcelona, on the other hand, are a much more stable ship. Across all competitions, the Catalan giants are seen as strong contenders for every single major title. They remain unbeaten in 2025, and this game was a great display of why that is the case.

As the first-leg of their quarterfinal tie, both Barça and Niko Kovac’s team arrived to this game with the objective to get themselves a favorable result. For La Blaugrana, however, that meant getting a convincing victory before they head to Germany for the second leg.

Once the first half of this game kicked off, that proved to be exactly what Barcelona seemed to be chasing. The Catalan giants were after the Dortmund goal minutes after the game started, and they wanted to suffocate their German opponents as much as possible.

During the opening 45 minutes, Hansi Flick’s team had 67% possession. They also generated an xG of 1.97, as they took a total of 11 shots, and six of them were on target. The Dortmund goalkeeper had to make four saves in that time period, and it was clear that Barça were attacking with intensity.

However, Dortmund also had their fair share of opportunities. On various transitions, the German side seemed to have a good chance of scoring, but their own carelessness ended up costing them as they failed to capitalize with the five shots that they took and the opportunities that they missed.

Barcelona, however, did manage to get a first-half goal through Raphinha. Courtesy of a set piece delivery, Inigo Martinez headed the ball towards the centre of the box, and that was then poked towards the goal by Pau Cubarsi. However, before the ball could trickle into the back of the net, Raphinha ended up getting the final touch.

In the second half, Barcelona showed even better efficiency in front of the goal. During this half, La Blaugrana generated a total xG of 1.74, but ended up scoring three goals against Dortmund. Raphinha managed to get two assists, one for Robert Lewandowski’s goal and one for Lamine Yamal’s goal as well.

All three of Barça’s forwards were simply outstanding, as Lewandowski managed to score a brace in the second half, and Lamine Yamal was essentially the orchestrator for several of the goals that Barcelona scored. Ultimately, it was a game in which each of the three forwards managed to grab a goal.

From the defense to the midfield, the team performed exceptionally well. They controlled the tempo of the game really expertly and also managed to simply evade any kind of pressure that Dortmund tried to put on them as well.
