Barcelona suffer first CL group exit since 2000

Scorers: Müller 34′, Sané 43′, Musiala 62′

Defeat in Munich means Barcelona have failed to get out of a Champions League group for the first time since 2000.

Barça struggled early on and then lost Jordi Alba to injury before things have gotten even worse in Munich. Some superb work from Robert Lewandowski was followed by a cross to Thomas Müller, whose header just crossed the line before Ronald Araújo could clear.

Before long it wass 2-0, with Leroy Sané beating Marc-André ter Stegen from range. And Jamal Musiala converted an Alphonso Davies cross after the break to make it three.

Barcelona will now play Europa League/Uefa Cup football for the first time since 2004.

Benfica pip Barça with convincing win

Scorers: Yaremchuk 16′, Gilberto 22′

Barça’s loss is Benfica’s gain, with the Portuguese giants doing enough to reach the knockout rounds.

Benfica knew a win would probably be enough going into the night and they delivered.

A smart piece of movement from Roman Yaremchuk saw him freed up to convert the opener inside the box. The lead was doubled when Gilberto finished off a superb team move, sending the Estádio da Luz into wild celebration.

A deserved win and a first time in the knockouts since 2017 for the club from Lisbon.

Manchester United’s young boys held by Young Boys

Scorers: Greenwood 8′; Riedler 42′

Manchester United led early on but ultimately drew at Old Trafford in an evening for the kids to remember.

Manchester United got off to a perfect start with Mason Greenwood volleying home after just seven minutes.

Young Boys responded well, taking 17 shots to United’s seven and scoring a well-earned equaliser from distance through Fabian Riedler.

The night became one to remember for individuals more than anything, with Tom Heaton handed a debut 20 years after originally joining the club, then academy graduates Charlie Savage (son of Robbie) and Zidane Iqbal later joining him.

Lille earn top spot, Wolfsburg out

Scorers: Steffen 89′; Yılmaz 11′, David 72′, Gomes 78′

Lille started and ended the evening top of the group, knocking Wolfsburg out of Europe in the process.

The visitors made a dream start, with Burak Yılmaz rounding off a superb counter to put them ahead in Germany.

The group was wide open when the day started but Lille hardly had to break a sweat. Jonathan David, Angel Gomes both calmly converted after the break to end Wolfsburg’s hopes of a comeback. Even Renato Steffen’s sweet late strike couldn’t reignite those dreams.

RB Salzburg beat Sevilla to claim knockout place

Scorers: Okafor 50′

Red Bull Salzburg are the first Austrian side to reach the knockout rounds of the Champions League/European Cup since 1991.

Sevilla dominated the first half but couldn’t open the scoring and paid the price. The deadlock was broken by Noah Okafor in the 50th minute, with the forward arriving to slot home a cross from wanted man Karim Adeyemi.

Sevilla’s Joan Jordan then picked up yellow cards in minutes 53 and 56 as the LaLiga outfit went down to 10 men.

Ever the Europa League experts, Sevilla finish third and drop into the competition they have won more times than any other club.

Late goal sees Chelsea slip into second

Scorers: Claudinho 38′, Azmoun 41′, Ozdoev 90+4; Werner 2′, 85′, Lukaku 62′

Zenit’s Magomed Ozdoev broke Chelsea hearts with a last-gasp equaliser to deny the Premier League side top spot in Group H.

Timo Werner gave the visitors the perfect start when he got on the end of Ross Barkley’s corner to finish from close range in just the second minute.

The hosts got a deserved equaliser late in the first half, however, when Claudinho timed his run perfectly to glance home a cross from Douglas Santos. And they hit the front just three minutes later when Sardar Azmoun was played into acres of space to round Kepa and finish to an empty net.

Chelsea struck back just after the hour mark as they sliced through the Zenit defence before Werner set up Romelu Lukaku for the simplest of finishes on his first start since returning from injury.

Werner grabbed his second of the game five minutes from time, surviving a VAR check for offside to seemingly rescue Chelsea’s hopes, but Ozdoev hit a rocket in stoppage time to ruin Thomas Tuchel’s night.

Juventus snatch top spot

Scorers: Kean 18′

As a result, Juventus finish top thanks to a narrow win over Malmö.

Moise Kean rewarded the Old Lady for a positive start, the striker nodding home after an outrageous cross from the outside of Federico Bernardeschi’s left boot.

Kean was denied his second goal of the game in the late stages when Malmö goalkeeper Ismael Diawara brilliantly deflected the ball over after initially spilling Adrien Rabiot’s effort.

The late drama in Russia saw the Serie A giants finish top of the pile.

See you in the knockout rounds!
