Barcelona complete perfect league season

Scorers: Paredes 11′, Bonmatí 23′; Sampedro 64′

There was plenty to play for at the Estadi Johan Cruyff as champions Barcelona looked to wrap up their season with a perfect league record.

However, their opponents Atlético Madrid had just as much on the line and needed only a single point to ensure a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League over rivals Real Madrid.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Barcelona put them to the test right from kick-off and were up 2-0 after 25 minutes thanks to goals from Irene Paredes and Aitana Bonmatí.

Then to make matters worse, Merel van Dongen was sent off minutes into the second half leaving Atleti down to 10. The challenge became even greater but a goal from departing captain Amanda Sampedro handed them a lifeline.

In the end, Atleti couldn’t find a way to put a second past the hosts (they only conceded 11 goals all season) and fall just short of European football.

However, there was one great chance when Rasheedat Ajibade was through on goal only for Bonmatí to tackle her from behind and be sent off for preventing a scoring opportunity.

Barcelona thus finished the season with 30 wins from 30 matches and a staggering goal differential of +148.

Asllani heroics sends Madrid to UWCL

Scorers: Asllani 44′ (PEN)

Real Madrid had to cross their fingers that rivals Barcelona would beat Atlético Madrid if they wanted a chance at European football.

Additionally, Los Blancos needed three points in their final match against Villarreal and did just enough to come out victorious.

A nervy match was decided by a penalty which exit-linked Kosovare Asllani snuck past Pamela Tajonar to send Madrid into the Champions League.

In addition to Barcelona and Real Madrid, Real Sociedad (second place) will also play Champions League football.
