Barcelona are starting a major rebuild of their reserve team, Barça Atletic, after a disappointing season that ended in relegation.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club has decided not to exercise the purchase options on four players who were on loan with the team last season, namely, Ruben Lopez, Ivan Cedric, Pedro Soma, and Abdul Aziz Issah.

Their contracts with Barça Atletic end today, and they will return to their original clubs. This move signals a fresh start for the reserve side as Barcelona looks to build a stronger squad for the upcoming campaign.

What’s the reason?

The club’s decision comes down to two main reasons. First, the team’s relegation and the impressive talent already in the club’s youth system.

Barça’s academy continues to produce high-quality players, making it unnecessary to spend money on permanent deals for these loanees.

Ruben Lopez will return to Deportivo de la Coruna, Ivan Cedric to UD Las Palmas, Pedro Soma to UE Cornella, and Abdul Aziz Issah to Dreams FC.

All four showed moments of promise, but Barça Atletic’s new project will focus on homegrown talent.

More departures on the horizon

The exits of these loaned players come as part of a wider clear-out.

Captain Aleix Garrido has already signed with Eibar until 2028, Pau Prim said his goodbyes and will head to Al-Sadd in Qatar, while Diego Percan has joined Polish side Arka Gdynia. Ander Astralaga, meanwhile, will spend the next year on loan at Granada.

Barça Atletic are also working to confirm the sales of two more players, namely Sergi Domínguez and Noah Darvich. Dominguez is set to join Dinamo Zagreb, who will pay €1.2 million for the defender.

Meanwhile, Noah Darvich is close to finalising a move to Stuttgart for a fee of around €1 million, including fixed and variable payments.
