Welcome to the third annual edition of the Ballon dâOneFootball as we continue our countdown of the top 25 players in the world.
And today we unveil our runner-upâŠ
(Last year: 3rd)
Heâs in the headlines, on the scoresheet, and in your face. Itâs hard not to be drawn to the bright star that is Kylian MbappĂ©. At 23 years old, the Frenchman is carving out a spot as a future legend of the game for both club and country.
His littered trophy cabinet speaks for itself. Four Ligue 1 titles, three French Cups, the UEFA Nations League, and, of course, a World Cup. How good would the Champions League look alongside those one day?
And Mbappé is not simply just a member of accomplished squads; he has played a vital role in claiming each piece of silverware for both Paris Saint Germain and France following his rapid rise at AS Monaco.
Itâs thanks to his perfect blend of agility, anticipation and composure that makes him one of footballâs hottest commodities. His pace frightens every backline in Europe yet he never moves so fast that he doesnât have complete control of the ball, his close control leaving defenders in shock.
And he is not one to shy away from the spotlight, stepping up to be the man of the hour on multiple occasions in his young career already. Just ask the likes of Real Madrid, Spain, or Argentina.
Even while sharing the pitch with Neymar and Lionel Messi in PSGâs attack, MbappĂ© still finds a way to shine brighter. Heâs the clubâs leading scorer with 26 goals to his name this season (second-place has seven, for comparison) in addition to 17 assists.
His form with Les Bleus follows the same trend with nine goals and five assists in his last five matches.
Finishing as Ligue 1âs top scorer three seasons in a row and successfully matching Zlatan IbrahimoviÄâs PSG goal tally are no mean feats.
And he shows no sign of slowing, revealing heâs keen to reach Thierry Henryâs record (51) with France âmuch quicker than people think,â he insists.
It seems the best is yet to come.
