Speaking to L’Équipe in a lengthy interview before Spain’s loss to Japan (2-1) last night, the former France national team centre back Aymeric Laporte spoke about the importance of the match, but also the fact that France don’t posses a left-footed centre-back – which would have seen him easily selected by Didier Deschamps if he still retained French nationality.

Laporte has clearly moved on from the switch, saying “I don’t mind, it’s long gone – I don’t even think about it anymore” .

In 2021 after his switch to Spanish nationality, Aymeric Laporte received approval from FIFA to switch national teams from France to Spain. He had played for the France U21 side but was yet to represent Les Bleus at the senior level – he went on to represent Spain at Euro 2020 and is currently in Qatar with La Roja as they qualified for the knockouts of the 2022 World Cup, despite a suprising 2-1 loss to Japan after a 7-0 win aganst Costa Rica and a 1-1 draw against Germany in group E.
