Sundinfo are reporting that Axel Witsel is set for a return to Standard Liege. The former Borrussia Dortmund midfielder, who is currently playing for Atlético Madrid, looks set to end his career with his former Belgian side. Witsel looks set to follow in the footsteps of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Aldeweireld by ending his career in Belgium. The plan is for Witsel to come in as a player before transitioning into a coaching role with the side.
Witsel was part of the last Standard Liege side to lift the Pro League title in 2008/2009. During three seasons with the side he played 130 games, scoring 32 goals and winning two league titles and one domestic cup. He then left Belgium to play for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Benfica, Zenit St Petersburg, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid. Last season the now 36-year-old, who has transitioned from central midfield to central defence, played just 21 games for Madrid, grabbing one assist.
Witsel’s return is likely to be well received by the fans due to his previous success at the club. His experience should also prove valuable to the young players in the side, who can certainly learn from him. both Vertonghen and Alderweireld provided both on and off the field benefits for their sides during their brief Belgian Pro League stints.
