FC Porto will continue their pre-season preparations by visiting Austria Vienna on Friday at 6pm.

The hosts finished seventh in the Austrian Bundesliga last season but managed to secure a place in the Conference League playoffs.

Porto, meanwhile, came third in Portugal’s top flight, ending up 18 points behind champions Sporting. It was a spectacular fall, having finished two points behind the winners the season before.

That disappointing campaign spelt the end of Sérgio Conceição’s reign as manager. Across seven years, he guided Porto to three championships and three runners-up spots, with the 2023/24 campaign proving his worst.

Dragons entering a new era under Vítor Bruno

The announcement of Conceição’s successor was swift. Vítor Bruno, who had a modest playing career, became the club’s 13th permanent manager since José Mourinho left a decade ago. Even more striking is the fact that this is Bruno’s first managerial job. Up until now, Bruno had served as Conceição’s right-hand man since they joined Olhanense in 2011. The idea is continuity without making any radical changes.

“He’s somebody who knows the squad and the club and who is a man of courage, without fear to take on this challenge. We will provide him with everything we have at our disposal,” President André Villas-Boas said.

That being said, he’s gained significant experience leading the first team, having managed the team in 17 matches due to Conceição’s numerous suspensions. The results have been highly favourable, with 15 victories and two draws. In one of Porto’s worst seasons in their modern history, Bruno led the team to 13 points out of a possible 15 in the 2023/24 season.

“It hurts me to talk about this and I say so unreservedly. 13 years leaves a mark on you. I’m very grateful to Sérgio for everything we went through. I am eternally grateful to him,” Bruno said.

“I hold no grudges against anyone. I hope that in the last 13 years I have also done my bit to contribute to Sérgio’s success.”

In addition to working alongside Conceição, Bruno’s background is enriched by the fact that he is the son of the well-known Portuguese manager Vítor Manuel, who has coached over 500 top-flight games in Portugal.

Austria Vienna vs Porto team news

So far this summer, Austria Vienna and their newly installed head coach, Stephan Helm, have seen no fewer than five new faces join the club. Abubakr Barry arrived from the Gambian outfit Superstars, while Maurice Malone (FC Basel), Nik Prelec (Cagliari), Matteo Pérez Vinlöf (FC Bayern II), and Cristiano (São Bento) joined from their respective clubs on loan.

Meanwhile, there have been several departures, including Matthias Braunöder (Como), Christian Früchtl (Lecce), Can Keleş (Karagümrük), and Manuel Polster (Lausanne-Sport).

Porto has seen prolific soccer Mehdi Taremi depart for Inter, whom he joined as a free agent. Veteran defender Pepe’s current deal expired, and he’s currently without a club. Francisco Conceição’s loan has been made a permanent acquisition. The son of the club’s former boss was a Porto academy graduate and part of Portugal’s disappointing Euro 2024 campaign.

This will be Austria Vienna’s fifth pre-season friendly (two wins, one draw, and one loss) before the opening leg of their Conference League qualifier against Ilves, whereas Porto is looking to make it four consecutive warm-up victories as they build momentum toward a Portuguese Super Cup meeting with Sporting early next month.
