The Socceroos entered the match after beating the United Arab Emirates in their AFC qualifying play-off.

After finishing fifth in South American qualifying, Peru looked to qualify for their second straight World Cup.

But it wasn't to be as the underdog Australians sealed their fifth straight visit to the World Cup.

The match, played in Qatar, finished 0-0 after 120 minutes of play.

Martin Boyle missed the first penalty for Australia, but Graham Arnold's side fought back to win thanks to some heroics from goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne.

The Sydney FC stalwart denied Alex Valera's effort and secure the Socceroos' place in the tournament later this year.
