Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord says that Australia are exactly where they wanted to be ahead of their FIFA Women’s World Cup round of 16 tie against Denmark tomorrow.

The CommBank Matildas didn’t make life easy for themselves in the group stage but they still advanced to the knockouts as group winners to claim a favourable draw in the round of 16.

The tie against Denmark will be played in front of a home crowd at Stadium Australia in Sydney, forward Foord’s home city, and she is excited for the big occasion.

“[It’s] one of my favourite stadiums, I couldn’t be more excited to be back here,” Foord said when speaking in the pre-match press conference.

Reflecting on Australia’s win against Canada in their final group match, Foord said that The CommBank Matildas will need to deliver a similar top level performance against the Danes to progress.

She said “We need to bring everything that we brought to the Canada game to put us in the best spot to get the result we need to move forward.”

Foord scored twice in Australia’s 3-1 victory over Denmark in an international friendly in October last year. She looks likely to again be a threat in tomorrow’s tie after linking-up well with Arsenal teammate Steph Catley in their last group stage game.

“I was out on the left with Steph [who] I’m very comfortable with playing [for] club and country,” Foord said. “We’ve played lots of games together and we just connected well, and it just flowed.”

Australia avoided a round of 16 clash with England by winning their group. Foord said that the team are exactly where they wanted to be at this stage in the tournament and they must keep the momentum rolling on.

She said “The position we are in now is the position that we exactly wanted to be in. The group stage is done and we are into the next stage.

“It’s really exciting but at the same time, we want to make the most of it and keep going.”

Australia’s round of 16 tie against Denmark kicks-off at 11.30am on Monday morning.
