Australia have qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, thanks to a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

The match had ended 0-0 even after the two sides had gone to extra time in Doha, and Australia opted to bring on substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne for the shoot-out.

Australia’s first penalty from Martin Boyle was saved by Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, but then Peru squandered their advantage when Luis Advíncula struck the post. Redmayne became the hero when he saved in sudden death from Alex Valera.

A jubilant Australia  have been placed in Group D and will face France, Denmark, and Tunisia at the World Cup, and there is now only one place in the tournament remaining.

Costa Rica and New Zealand will face each other on Tuesday for the remaining spot, which will be in Group E alongside Spain, Germany and Japan.
