Augsburg are close to signing defensive duo Japhet Tanganga and Kevin Mbabu, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

Tanganga is set to join from Tottenham Hotspur on a season long loan with a buy option of €6m. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou does not have Tanganga within his plans right now as he is yet to make an appearance this season and has struggled for game time in recent years.

The 24-year-old will offer versatility to Augsburg as he can operate as a centre-back or a right back and will be looking for regular starts to get his career back on track.

He is currently undergoing his medical in Germany and is set to be Augsburg’s first signing of the day.

Mbabu will also join on a season-long loan from Fulham. The Swiss international played just six times for Fulham in the Premier League last season and was loaned out to Swiss side, Servette FC in January.

Augsburg’s right-back Raphael Framberger is currently suffering with a cruciate ligament rupture and will be out of action for a while, meaning Mbabu will become the replacement for him and will be likely to slot straight into the lineup, as 19-year-old midfielder Arne Engels has been playing in the right-back position for the past two games.

Wolfsburg was Mbabu’s previous club before his move to Fulham and he is keen on a move back to the Bundesliga. The 28-year-old has arrived in Augsburg today and a deal should be completed this afternoon.

There is no surprise that Augsburg are looking to strengthen their defence after conceding nine goals already in all competitions this season.
