José Bordalás’ side thought they had one back just before half-time courtesy of a Carlos Soler volley but a VAR review led to the goal being ruled out after the ball had gone out of play in the build-up to the goal.

They did manage to get one back seven minutes into the second half and it was Soler again, this time his powerful header from 10 yards out stood as Valencia found a way back into the game.

But their hopes were finally dashed midway through the second half when substitute Pedri’s strike from the edge of the area deflected off Omar Aldrete on the way in.
