Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang praised Arsenal’s spirit after the Gunners came from a goal behind to draw 1-1 with old foes Manchester United tonight at Old Trafford.
While it is pretty clear to everyone that both these sides haven fallen massively from the days when they dominated the Premier League, the first 44 minutes of the game was so woefully short of anything resembling quality that it was almost sad to see.
However, the game would finally spring to life on the stroke of half-time when a Manchester United counter attack ended with a fine Scott McTominay strike from the edge of the area nestling in the roof of Bernd Leno’s net.
Both sides emerged for the second half showing a lot more intent and Arsenal would draw level via a classy finish from talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, after a mistake from young United defender Axel Tuanzebe.
Despite both teams pushing forward in search of a winner, neither had the required composure or quality in the final third and it finished a point a piece.
Speaking after the game Aubameyang revealed the Gunners were happy to come away with a draw and hailed his side for fighting to get back into the game.
“I think the team fought very well today. We take a point. It’s always hard to come here so we will take it,” the Gabon international told Sky Sports.
“It’s not easy when you take a goal just before half-time. But we came back in the second half with great spirit. Last week we came back as well. We need to start with confidence.”
Aubameyang’s goal was initially ruled out by the linesman for offside, but VAR intervened to overrule the decision, and the 30-year-old admitted players are becoming cautious of celebrating their goals due to the controversial technology.
“I took the ball from Bukayo [Saka]. I was sure I was not offside. I was surprised the referee whistled. I always try to score even if there is a whistle from the referee. I heard the crowd saying it was offside but it was a goal so I was happy.”
“Yeah of course. It’s always a bit of a strange feeling. You cannot celebrate 100% but it’s OK because I am happy at the same time.”
