The new Atlético Madrid third kit has officially been released and it’s – wait for it – an homage to Neptune, God of the Sea.
You read that correctly.
The club explained the design on their website: “Our new kit pays tribute to Madrid with a design based on the aerial map of the city where, in the centre of the shirt, appears Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo, the location of Fuente de Neptuno, where we celebrate our titles along with the fans.”
It’s a nice idea and continues Nike’s theme for the season of using the local cities of clubs to make up the design of their third-choice shirt.
The back of the shirt also features a trident, another nod to Neptune.
But does it have to be so ugly? The shades of blue used are a little bit sickly to say the least and the shirt just looks incredibly busy.
The kit is expected to mostly expected to be seen in Champions League away games.
