There was quite a lively atmosphere inside José Fierro Stadium before the Tucumán Clásico between Atlético Tucumán in blue and the red-shirted San Martín de Tucumán.

The rivals came into Saturday’s match in very different positions, the home team in second place with 28 points and the visitors down in 20th place with just 13 points.

Luis Miguel Rodríguez opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the tenth minute after centre back Lucas Acevedo was judged to have fouled Guillermo Acosta in the area.

The second half started with a flurry of activity on both ends of the pitch. After El Santo partially cleared, Rodríguez received a ball he crossed for midfielder David Barbona to double the home team’s lead in the 47th minute.

In response, Luciano Pons pulled his side back within one in the 49th minute. The 28-year-old forward finished on the rebound after goalkeeper Cristian Lucchetti spilled a header from Rodrigo Moreira.

Acevedo made up for his earlier mistake by heading home the equalising goal in the 73rd minute from Tino Costa. The centre back rose over Atlético’s Mathías Abero and directed his header down out of the reach of Lucchetti.

San Martín de Tucumán then took the lead two minutes later when Costa capitalised on another rebound from the goalkeeper.

Claudio Bieler moved the ball over to Gonzalo Rodríguez, whose shot forced Lucchetti into a diving save. The rebound popped out and Costa finished on the empty net at the far post in the 75th minute.

As a sign of the intensity of the rivalry, Atlético’s backup goalkeeper Franco Sbuttoni was sent off in the first minute of stoppage time.

After falling into a two-goal hole at the start of the second half, San Martín sparked into life and claimed a massive victory for the red half of the city.

The victory moves San Martín de Tucumán up to 16 points and into 17th place after 14 matches. Atlético Tucumán remain on 28 points and may see Defensa y Justicia overtake them after their fixture on Monday.
