Superliga side AtlĂ©tico TucumĂĄn were unable to take advantage of early chances as GrĂȘmio took a 2-0 lead after the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals.

AtlĂ©tico were unable to recover after Gervasio NĂșñez was sent off just before half-time, allowing the Brazilians to take a big step toward repeating as South American champions.

Wingers Allison and Éverton Soares provided the scoring for GrĂȘmio, who are currently in fifth place in the BrasileirĂŁo.

After a highly-competitive first half-hour of play, the Brazilians finally made the breakthrough.

Cícero’s header somehow made its way through the box, which allowed Allison to easily finish from eight yards.

The two sides looked as if they were going to play another very competitive half, but TucumĂĄn’s Gervasio NĂșñez was sent off after VAR review.

NĂșñez came down with his studs on the back of Alisson, and after consulting the monitor, the referee sent him off and forced the Argentinians to play the second half with 10 men.

GrĂȘmio would waste no time doubling their advantage, as they would score just 10 minutes after the break.

Alisson capped off his man-of-the-match performance as he provided Éverton Soares with a perfect cross to make it 2-0 to the defending champions.

The second leg will be played in Brazil on 2 October. The winner will face the victor of Argentinian sides River Plate and Independiente.
