Atlético-MG and Palmeiras are fighting for a spot in the Brazilian Championship’s top four. After beating Sport 1-0 on Sunday, Palmeiras maintains a three-point lead over Atlético-MG, despite the Rooster’s 1-0 victory over Cuiabá.

Palmeiras have won five of their last six games, putting them behind Hurricane in second place, on goal difference, (having played one more game) and two points behind Bragantino at the top of the Serie A standings, while Atlético is in fourth place, two points ahead of sixth place Bahia.

In their last outing, Palmeiras outplayed Sport, despite not applying much pressure, and were able to keep control of the game and create the best chances. Junior Tavares’ effort was the only shot on target for the Lions. On the other hand, Verdao had five shots on target. One of them resulted in a goal via Gustavo Scarpa, which he scored with the help of Danilo.

The Roosters, on the other hand, scored in the 26th minute through Nacho Fernández, after Hulk overcame Paulao and assisted the Argentine to open the scoring. Cuiabá began to enjoy more ball possession after going behind, but they couldn’t find a way to win the game. Atlético managed to see out the 1-0 win.

The battle for the top four resumes on Wednesday, with Atlético-MG hosting Flamengo at Mineiro and Palmeiras hosting Grêmio at Allianz Parque.

Sport travels to Antônio Accioly to face Atlético-GO, while Cuiabá takes on Bragantino at Nabi Abi Chedid.
