Speaking to Prime Video Sport, Atletico Madrid forward Memphis Depay (30) has said that he is open to a return to Ligue 1 in the future.
The Dutch international currently plays his club football at Atletico Madrid. This season, he has made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals. However, with Depay’s contract coming to an end at the end of next season, there are questions about his future.
Depay, who has played for the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United and Barcelona, notably had a successful stint at Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais. In his 178 appearances with Les Gones, the most appearances he has made for any single club, he scored 76 goals and registered 55 assists. 63 of those goals came in Ligue 1.
In an interview with Prime Video Sport, former Lyon forward Depay has praised the level of Ligue 1 and whilst he says that he is happy at Atletico Madrid, he hasn’t closed the door on a return to France. “I wouldn’t say it’s impossible [to come back to France] because nothing is impossible. For now, I am at Atletico Madrid and I am happy with them but we will see in the future,” said Depay.
The Dutchman, who will face France in this summer’s Euros, added, “Ligue 1 is under-valued by lots of people. It isn’t an easy league, it is very physical with lots of very quick players.”
