Atletico Madrid are scheduled to host Bayern Munich in the penultimate matchday of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night.

Diego Simeone’s side have experienced an average European campaign to date and they have accumulated only five points from four matches.

As a result, they are seven points adrift of leaders Bayern, who have already secured qualification for the round of 16 with the top spot.

Bayern are bound to ring in the changes for tomorrow’s clash and Atletico will be hoping to pounce and pick up a much-needed win.

They are currently two points ahead of Club Brugge while Red Bull Salzburg are bottom of the pile with one point on the board.

The clubs have faced each other on seven occasions and Bayern have had the upper hand with four wins compared to Atletico’s two (one draw). The reigning European champions have got the better of their Madrid counterparts in the previous two meetings which includes the 4-0 humbling at the Allianz Arena last month.

Despite the recent dominance, Atletico have had the advantage over Bayern on their home patch with back-to-back wins. They beat them 1-0 during the first leg of the 2015/2016 semi-final and won by the same scoreline in a group stage meeting in the next campaign. However, both of those results came at the old Vicente Calderon stadium.

In the previous five meetings, there has been just one game where both teams have found the back of the net. Antoine Griezmann, now at Barcelona (formerly of Atletico), is the only player in the history of the fixture to have scored a goal in the opposition home ground. Bayern players have the opportunity to match that feat on Tuesday.

Atletico are unbeaten in the Champions League at the Wanda Metropolitano since Chelsea’s stoppage-time winner through Michy Batshuayi in September 2017. It was the first European game in their new stadium. Over the next 12 matches, they have picked up nine victories and three draws and have kept a stunning tally of eight clean sheets.

Bayern’s away record against Spanish clubs has been poor of late. They suffered five successive defeats between 2013 and 2016, but have since picked up a win and draw at Sevilla and Real Madrid respectively. They will be eyeing only their second victory on the road in eight attempts against La Liga opposition tomorrow.
