Atletico Madrid are stepping up efforts to sign Chelsea defender Renato Veiga, but both clubs are still at odds over a suitable transfer fee.

According to L’Equipe, the Spanish giants have already submitted a second bid as they look to complete a deal for the Portuguese defender.

Their latest offer is worth €35 million (£30m) including bonuses, but Chelsea are holding out for at least €40m (£35m), so they are not far apart.

Veiga joined Chelsea from FC Basel just last summer and left an instant impression on manager Enzo Maresca.

Despite being able to play as a centre-back, left-back and in midfield, Maresca used the 21-year-old as a back-up option for Marc Cucurella.

He played 18 times for Chelsea across all competitions, notching two goals and an assist.

That was until he started pushing for more playing time as a centre-back to boost his chances of making it into the Portuguese national team squad.

Maresca couldn’t oblige, so Chelsea sanctioned a six-month loan spell at Juventus. Veiga gave a decent account of himself in Turin, featuring 15 times for the Serie A giants.

Veiga’s value has skyrocketed, and Chelsea are looking to bank significant profit on a player that cost them just €14m (£12m) last summer.

Chelsea’s asking price forced Juventus to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements, but Veiga is still highly sought after across Europe.

Atletico are currently leading the race to snap him up, but the defender has also been linked with a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Bayern haven’t made any moves yet, but they are monitoring his situation. Chelsea need to provide cover for Cucurella, who played 54 games last season.

Veiga would have been the ideal back-up option, but he doesn’t want to play second fiddle and would rather line up as a centre-back.

He was left out of the Club World Cup squad after returning from his loan. Despite having six years left on his contract, he’s not expected to stay in London for much longer.
