Atletico Madrid starlet to be given chance by Diego Simeone after frustrating four-month break

It’s been a frustrating start to life at Atletico Madrid for Arthur Vermeeren, who has struggled to get a look-in since arriving from Royal Antwerp during the winter transfer window. The teenage midfielder has made only four appearances since signing, and his one and only start came back on the 31st of January (vs Rayo Vallecano).

Diego Simeone has taken the very cautious approach with Vermeeren, and according to Diario AS, he’s set to hand him his second start for Saturday’s final match of the season, which is against Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.

Vermeeren was selected in the training line-up alongside fellow midfielders Koke Resurreccion and Rodrigo Riquelme. In defence, Simeone opted not to go for any of the defenders set to leave Atleti, with Axel Witsel, Jose Maria Gimenez and Cesar Azpilicueta selected alongside wing-backs Marcos Llorente and Samuel Lino.

Next season should be better for Vermeeren, but he can stamp his authority on the Atletico Madrid line-up with a strong performance against La Real. His inclusion would also be very exciting for supporters, who have waited very patiently to see him start another match.
