According to English media, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid are set to revive their interest in Giovani Lo Celso. The Tottenham Hotspur playmaker was on their radar back in 2019 but the club missed out on the move. However, it appears the Spanish giants could once again raid the Argentine in the summer, with Diego Simeone keen on adding creative reinforcements for next season.

Giovani Lo Celso’s Disappointing Season So Far

Giovani Lo Celso had emerged as one of the better players for Tottenham during the backend of last season, even under Jose Mourinho. However, the midfielder has been extremely unlucky since struggling with a host of injury problems throughout the past 12 months or so.

Lo Celso has remained out on the sidelines for more than two months now due to the ongoing hamstring problem. He also had difficulties dealing with a muscle injury earlier in the campaign. As a result, the 24-year-old has notched up only 436 minutes of league football this season with a total of just four starts.

The Argentine’s absence on the sidelines has forced Mourinho to try out different options in the number ten slot, including Lucas Moura in recent weeks. Although the Spurs manager has no shortage of options, Lo Celso’s creativity has been missing behind the two star strikers in Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane.

Should Tottenham Offload Lo Celso In The Summer?

Tottenham Hotspur paid a fortune to permanently secure the services of Lo Celso more than a year ago. The move paid off considering his performances in the Premier League, but his recent struggles with fitness draw question marks over his future at the club.

However, offloading the former PSG star in the summer might not be a prudent move from Mourinho for multiple reasons. Dele Alli, for one, is facing an uncertain future at the club, having been linked with a move away from north London last month.

In addition, Tanguy Ndombele, who is one of the club’s best performers this season, is starting to operate in a deeper midfield role in recent matches. It further accentuates the presence of an out and out number ten like Lo Celso, who can not only create chances but also score goals.

Given the current financial climate, Tottenham may also have to be content with a significant net loss, should they plan to offload Lo Celso in the summer. It doesn’t bode well for the management as the club hopes for the player to unleash his true quality once he returns to full fitness.
