Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid have on Sunday etched their names into the storied history books of the club.

This comes owing to their latest three-point haul.

Atlético marked their return to action a short time ago, welcoming Osasuna to the Spanish capital for a La Liga showdown.

With both Real Madrid and Barcelona playing their part at the Spanish Super Cup this weekend, the Rojiblancos headed into proceedings in the knowledge that a victory would see them reclaim top spot in the table.

And, when all was said and done, march on to victory is precisely what Atléti managed.

A solitary goal, netted early in the 2nd-half by Julián Alvarez, proved enough to put a spirited Osasuna to the sword at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

And yet, as alluded to above, their latest triumph proved significant in much more than simply guiding Simeone’s side back into table-topping status.

This comes amid confirmation that, with 14 successive wins under their belts, this Atlético side have now racked up more victories on the trot than any other in the club’s history.
