Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement with Axel Witsel to join the club ahead of the new season, according to Marca.
The Belgian player and the club have reached an agreement for the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder to join for the 2022-23 season with the option for a second season.
The midfielder will strengthen Diego Simeone’s midfield and will arrive on a free transfer after coming to the end of his contract with the German club.
Atlético wanted the Belgian in 2015 when he played for Zenit St Petersburg. Witsel played 28 times for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season, scoring scored twice in his final season with the German club.
The La Liga club will be his sixth club after stints at Standard Liege, Benfica, Zenit Saint-Petersburg, Tianjin and Dortmund. He has played more than 600 professional matches.
