Atlético Madrid president confirms João Félix wants to leave the club

João Félix wants to leave Atlético Madrid as he does not have a good relationship with coach Diego Simeone, says the club’s president Gil Marin.

Félix joined Atlético in a sensational €127m switch from Benfica in the summer of 2019, but the 23-year-old has rarely hit the heights expected of him during his time in the Spanish capital.

The Portuguese international has scored four goals in 18 appearances for the Rojiblancos this season, but his inability to hold down a regular starting berth has prompted speculation about his future.

And now club president Marin has confirmed the rumours that Félix does not get on with Simeone and that the player wants to leave.

“He has the highest level in the world but the relationship between him and the coach is not good, nor is his motivation,” said Marin in quotes carried by El Partidazo de COPE.

“The reasonable thing is to think that it comes out, although I would love for it to continue, but that is not the player’s idea.”

Whether Félix – who is currently on international duty at the World Cup – leaves Atleti in January or stays until the summer remains to be seen, but it seems highly unlikely that the club will be able to recoup much of that €127m fee if/when they do sell him.

He has so far scored 33 goals and assisted 18 others in 129 appearances for the club.
