The powers that be at La Liga giants Atlético Madrid have opened talks over a fresh addition to the club’s goalkeeper ranks.

That’s according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who points towards Walter Benítez as the player in question.

Benítez, for his part, is a 31-year-old Argentine international, who is currently plying his trade at club level with Dutch heavyweights PSV Eindhoven.

The shot-stopper played a central role in his side’s recent Eredivisie triumph, featuring from the off in all but one of PSV’s league outings, allowing just 21 goals along the way.

And such exploits, evidently, did not go at all unappreciated on the part of the brass at the aforementioned Atlético Madrid.

Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of Joan Oblak in Spain’s capital, Atléti are understood to have opened talks with both PSV, and Benítez, regarding a summer transfer.

Not only that, but the Rojiblancos have gone as far as to offer up a ‘long-term’ contract to the Argentine.

This comes with Fabrizio Romano concluding that Diego Simeone and co. ‘believe in Benítez’ as their potential future no.1.
