Atletico turn around deficit via shoot out success

Scorers: Di Marco 33â€Č; Griezmann 35â€Č, Depay 86â€Č

Atletico Madrid trailed by a single goal heading into the second leg of their clash with Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The game began in a surprisingly open fashion, with both sides testing the opposition no.1 , while Antoine Griezmann fired wildly over when well placed.

Inter grew in confidence and were handed breathing room just after the half hour mark, when NiccolĂČ Barella slid the ball square for Federico Di Marco to power the ball past Jan Oblak and leave Atletico needing to score three to head through.

Within two minutes the home side were level on the night though, as prolific striker Antoine Griezmann grabbed his 19th goal of the season to leave status quo restored, but the home crowd roaring.

The second half began much in the same open fashion. Inter continued to soak up pressure and look to hit on counter attack, and Inzaghi’s side could have put the tie to bed with 15 minutes to play, only for Marcus Thuram to blaze over when one on one with Oblak.

Barella had a similar chance moments later after great defensive work from Matteo Darmian, but his shot only found the gloves of the Atleti shot-stopper. Diego Simeone’s side weren’t done though, and moments after Memphis Depay hit the inside of the post he went one better, finding the bottom corner from 10 yards out and finally handing Simeone’s side the goal that their play deserved.

Amid a cacophony of noise in Madrid, Atleti pushed for a winner and Inter appeared to be on the ropes.

Seconds from the final whistle, they had the chance to find one, with Griezmann finding substitute Riquelme, but the Argentine couldn’t keep his shot down and sent his effort from 12 yards into the upper tier of the Wanda Metropolitano.

Extra time beckoned, and it was still the home side that came on the stronger. However, as the time dragged on both sides took fewer risks, knowing that one mistake could mean the end of their Champions League journey, and preferring to risk a penalty shoot out.

So penalties it was.

After misses from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klassen, Lautaro Martinez fired his spot kick over the crossbar to send Inter home, and Atletico Madrid into the quarter finals of the competition

Dortmund squeeze past PSV

Scorers: Sancho 3â€Č, Reus 90+5â€Č

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund squeezed past PSV Eindhoven to book their place in the last eight.

The two sides were heading into the second leg of their tie all square, with the Bundesliga side having been held to a 1-1 draw by PSV in Eindhoven three weeks ago.

With an immense atmosphere in Germany, it took just three minutes for loanee Jadon Sancho to hand his side a precious lead. Picking the ball up on the very edge of the penalty area, Sancho drilled a low right-footed effort into the corner, to put his side on course for the last 8 early on.

It was something of an early barrage from the hosts, racking up several shots on target as PSV struggled to get into the game. The visitors continued to hold on though, and grew into the encounter towards the end of the first half, heading into the break the stronger side.

Dortmund survived a warning early in the second half when Hirving Lozano, on as a half time substitute, saw his shot smack off the post from all of 25 yards out. As they invited pressure, PSV grew in confidence and though Dortmund offered the odd attack, the game was mostly being played in their half.

A second goal was needed, and with 15 minutes left to play that is precisely what they thought they had got when Niclas FĂŒllkrug swept home a Marco Reus freekick, only for VAR to rule it out for the narrowest of offsides.

It led to a nervy atmosphere around the Signal Iduna Park, with PSV spurning several glorious chances to send the tie to extra time. With just 30 seconds left, a slip from Babadi allowed Reus to run through and double his side’s lead, finally settling any nerves, and ensure that Dortmund booked their spot in the quarter finals of the competition.
