Atletico Madrid are in advanced talks to sign Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who ends his contract in the summer of 2024.

L’Equipe reports that Los Rojiblancos are leading the race for the Moroccan midfielder and are close to agreeing personal terms, though they are yet to finalise the transfer fee with La Viola.

Amrabat, 26, has become one of the sought-after midfielders in Europe following his sensational World Cup 2022, where he helped the Atlas Lions reach the semi-finals for the first time in history.

He also played a vital role in Fiorentina reaching the finals of the Conference League last season before losing to West Ham United.

Barcelona have been long-term admirers of Amrabat, but they haven’t made any significant move since their failed loan approach in January.

Rumours of Atletico’s interest in Amrabat have ramped up in recent times, whilst the player also previously stated that he would be a good fit in Diego Simeone’s system.

As for the transfer fee, Fiorentina are likely to demand a sum in the region of €30 million for their star midfielder.

Atletico have a lot of uncertainties in their midfield, with Saul Niguez and Geoffrey Kondogbia linked with exits.

Saul has been subject to proposals from Saudi giants Al Ittihad and Al Nassr, who are looking to enhance their collection of world-class European stars.

Meanwhile, Kondogbia, who is said to be not in the plans of Simeone, is wanted by his former club AS Monaco.

Their exits could unlock the arrival of Amrabat, who will bring a lot of experience and quality to Atletico’s midfield.

Reports have emerged that Atletico are plotting a move for AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez, who is also the brother of former Atletico player Lucas Hernandez.

However, Theo is an unattainable target due to his €80m valuation and also citing the Spanish club’s financial crisis.
