Atletico Madrid are in advanced talks to sign Manchester City attacker Julian Alvarez, according to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo.

The news comes just a day after the Argentine international clinched the 2024 Copa America with the national team, defeating Colombia in the final.

The 24-year-old reportedly wants more game time than he has received under manager Pep Guardiola. He has mostly played second fiddle to Erling Braut Haaland and wants to be the main man elsewhere.

Alvarez played a key role in City’s successes over the past two seasons since joining from River Plate for around £15 million.

He recorded 17 goals and five assists in 49 appearances as the Cityzens won the treble in his first season in England.

The 2022 World Cup winner followed up with 19 goals and 13 assists in 54 appearances last term as City retained their Premier League title and reached the FA Cup final.

He played several positions away from his primary position as a striker, leading to his desire to leave the Etihad Stadium.

Alvarez will replace Atletico striker Alvaro Morata, who is seemingly on his way to AC Milan. He fits perfectly into manager Diego Simeone’s style.

He is well-suited to the Argentine manager’s favoured formations, playing alongside another striker.

Alvarez will spearhead Simeone’s bid to collect the La Liga crown from city rivals Real Madrid, with Barcelona also in the frame for the coveted title.

His departure leaves a hole in City’s squad as they look to challenge on multiple fronts next season. Guardiola utilised him in several roles, and the manager will miss his tactical versatility.

However, City have never been a team to rest on their laurels when they lose pivotal players.

Expect them to attack the transfer window and secure a potent replacement for the promising Argentine striker.
