Memphis Depay could be sidelined for two to three weeks and will miss Atletico Madrid’s clash against Real Betis with an injury, according to Marca.

The Dutch forward picked up the injury on international duty during the European Championship qualifying game against Gibraltar, with head coach Ronald Koeman describing it as severe.

The medical tests carried out on Wednesday detected a muscular injury in his thigh, and the Netherlands international is set to miss the weekend’s La Liga clash against Betis.

Depay moved to Wanda Metropolitano from Barcelona in January and has racked up three goals in seven appearances.

The former Lyon star had seemingly found his confidence after starting in Atletico’s last three games while scoring a brace in the 6-1 win over Sevilla. He also netted against Gibraltar.

The latest injury could prove to be a setback for his progress, but Los Rojiblancos will be hoping for a quick recovery.

Diego Simeone will turn to Alvaro Morata in the absence of Depay for this weekend’s league fixture.

The Spaniard has struggled to be an outright starter under Simeone this season, although he is Atletico’s joint-top scorer with Antoine Griezmann (10 goals).

Morata chipped in with a decisive goal in injury time against Girona weeks ago, and he will be looking to replicate a similar performance.

Angel Correa is also another option available in the attack, but it remains to be seen whether Simeone will hand him a start against Betis.

Atletico will look to extend their ten-match unbeaten streak in La Liga and close the gap on second-placed Real Madrid when they face Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
