Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is wanted in Spain, with Atletico Madrid keen on signing him this summer.
According to reports from DSports, ‘Romero is increasingly close to Atletico Madrid.’ The Spanish giants tabled an offer of €55 million plus another €10 million in add-ons.
It remains unclear whether this bid will force Spurs to sell the centre-back, who has his sight set on a move to Spain.
However, the report claims negotiations are ‘very advanced’, and the Tottenham defender has already spoken to Atletico Madrid gaffer Diego Simeone.
Romero has been a stellar defender for Spurs since joining the club four years ago, playing 124 games for the North London club.
He produced a Man of the Match performance in the Europa League final win against Manchester United.
Romero will be a massive miss in the Spurs rearguard if he leaves the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
He has been a mainstay in that backline, and the club will struggle to replace him.
However, the time has come to part ways with Romero.
His consistent injury setbacks and talks about playing in Spain leave Spurs with no choice but to accept his departure at the right price.
Spurs must act decisively and wisely in replacing their defensive talisman. A ready-made solution could be just across London in the form of Nathan Collins.
The Republic of Ireland international recorded the most blocks in the Premier League last season, and only one player won more aerial duels.
The 23-year-old has already impressed at multiple clubs and was a pillar under now-Tottenham manager Thomas Frank at Brentford. That existing relationship could be key.
Frank knows how to get the best out of him, and Collins, in turn, could adapt quickly to the system and dressing room culture.
Crucially, he offers the blend of aggression, composure, and consistency Spurs need once Romero departs.
