Just a day after news broke that Real Madrid had signed Atletico Madrid’s talented youngster Gabriel Suarez Castrelo, the Red and Whites have struck back by signing Real Madrid Castilla goalkeeper Mario de Luis.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper’s contract with Real Madrid expired on June 30, 2025, and he has joined Atletico Madrid on a free transfer. De Luis has signed a two-year deal that will keep him at Atletico until 2027.
Mario de Luis previously represented Spain at the Under-21 level, acting as a backup to Alejandro Iturbe.
At Atletico, with Iturbe set to go out on loan to gain experience in a higher division, they plan to make De Luis their starting goalkeeper for the upcoming campaign.
The move comes as Atletico’s response to losing Suarez Castrelo to their city rivals, and it’s said to be a signing that club legend Fernando Torres is especially happy about for Atletico Madrileño.
Mario de Luis has had an eventful journey in his young career. After training at Real Madrid’s academy, he moved to Rayo Vallecano, where he continued his development before returning to Real Madrid.
He overcame a serious injury along the way and managed to impress former Castilla coach Raul Gonzalez, earning his spot as a key player for the team.
Now, with his move to Atletico Madrid, De Luis is excited to start a new chapter. In his first words as an Atlético player, he shared,
“I’m very happy with the challenge I’m taking on. I’m eager to get started and I’m very excited. Collectively, let’s hope it’s a positive year and the team aspires to great things.”
With De Luis ready to step in as the new first-choice keeper, Atletico Madrid will aim for promotion to the Second Division and continue building a strong squad for the future.
