After several years acting as Diego Simeone’s assistant at Atlético Madrid, Mono Burgos will be flying solo starting next season, with Nelson Vivas coming in to replace him.
Burgos, who also featured in goal at Atlético from 2001 to 2004, has been attracting the attention of several clubs in Latin America.
According to ESPN, despite Marcelo Gallardo leading River Plate to back-to-back Copa Libertadores finals (winning in 2018), Burgos has been linked to the position.
Burgos has an outstanding history with the Argentine giants, winning five league titles and the 1996 Copa Libertadores between 1994 and 1999 before moving on to go play for Mallorca.
Gabriel Fernández Arenas (better known as Gabi) will also be joining Simeone’s staff as well. It’s been rumoured that Gabi could become a candidate to replace Simeone when his contract expires in 2022.
