Antoine Griezmann scored an 89th-minute penalty as Atlético de Madrid closed the gap on leaders Real Madrid to five points at the top of LaLiga.
Scorers: Lino 22′, Griezmann (PEN) 89′; Oyarzabal 73′;.
Samuel Lino had given Diego Simeone’s lead in early in the first half after getting on to the end of Koke’s raking pass before sliding in past Alex Remiro at his near post.
Rodrigo De Paul struck the post as the hosts searched for a second but Sociedad grew into the game and could’ve went into the break level but Mikel Oyarzabal’s header landed on to the roof of the net.
Oyarzabal was then denied by the woodwork with a effort from outside of the box but Atlético couldn’t deny him a third time as he raced on to Carlos Fernandez’s through ball to slide into the bottom corner 17 minutes from time.
The game appeared to be filtering out into a draw until Atlético were awarded a controversial penalty in the dying minutes after the ball appeared to strike the hand of Fernandez in the area while the Sociedad striker was lying on the ground.
A spot-kick was eventually awarded with Greizmann sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and rolling into the bottom corner to grab the three points for Atlético.
