Atlético de Madrid missed a chance to sit top of LaLiga after dropping two points on Saturday in a 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

Diego Simeone's side were again forced to come from behind in order to split the points despite controlling the game at the Metropolitano.

Julian Alvarez led the line and looked lively with one Antoine Griezmann on the bench. But Axel Witsel was the player in focus after a handful of mistakes that led to Villarreal capitalising.

A slip from the Belgian eventually gifted the ball to Gerard Moreno, and Reinildo took down the 32-year-old as a penalty was awarded. He stepped up and converted the beyond a diving Jan Oblak for 1-0.

Another error from Witsel minutes before half-time saw a sloppy backpass gift the visitors the ball in the box, but the Yellow Submarine couldn't capitalize.

Coming out after the break, Atleti continued to control the game regarding possession but lacked a true finishing touch. Villarreal, meanwhile, did just enough to hold on.

That was until a bit of pressure cracked the visitors.

Alvarez set up a slick move in the box for Atleti and while Angel Correa squandered his chance in front of goal, Samuel Lino poked home unmarked at the back post.

Simeone eventually introduced Griezmann but again Villarreal remained a formidable side to deny the club from the capital a potential second goal. A few late pushes from Atleti proved too little too late and the points were split.

The result means Atleti are one point behind Real Madrid who have a game in hand and Villarreal sit fifth.
