There was no stopping one of Spanish football’s hottest teams for Real Valladolid. Los Colchoneros took the game to the hosts from the first whistle, and were rewarded for their efforts inside 20 minutes.

After collecting a superb ball over the top beat the Valladolid offside trap, Nahuel Molina stabbed home from close range to snatch Atleti the lead.

Their top drawer first half performance was compounded José María Giménez, who headed in a free-kick in front of a flailing Jordi Masip in the Valladolid goal.

Atleti all but finished off their hosts in the last ten minutes of the first half when Antoine Griezmann provided a superb ball across the face of goal for Álvaro Morata to tap home.

While it looked to be plane sailing from there, Atleti’s lead was cut by Cyle Larin from the penalty spot before the break to keep the hosts in the game.

After pushing to claw their way back into the game, the hosts finally struck pay-dirt, as Sergio Escudero headed home from a set-piece to cut Atleti’s lead to one with 15 minutes remaining.

A Joaquín Fernández own goal killed the Valladolid momentum before Memphis Depay slotted home Atleti’s fifth, and ensured the capital club collected all three points to close in on Real Madrid in second place.
