A sublime assist in the closing stages unlocked an organised Osasuna defence and saw Atlético Madrid respond to their midweek Copa del Rey exit.
Scorers: Saúl 74′
The first half was largely an uneventful affair with little notable action for either side, with a José Giménez header being as close as either side came to finding the net.
The pink-haired Antoine Griezmann tried his luck seven minutes after the interval with an optimistic volley from a tight angle which ended up on the wrong side of the crossbar.
After Jan Oblak had to come up with a big save, the contest looked destined to end scoreless until a moment from inspiration from Rodrigo de Paul.
The World Cup winner picked out the run of Saúl Ñíguez delightfully with a perfectly timed and weighted clip over the top of a static Osasuna defence, allowing the midfielder to race through and finish calmly for all three points.
The victory ensures Diego Simeone’s side will end the weekend in the top four.
