América had the better of the first half against the Apertura champions, and their best chance came from a Salvador Reyes corner.

The ball eventually made its way to right-back Luis Fernando Fuentes, whose well-placed header was clawed away to safety by the diving hand of goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

The Colombia international pulled off another important save in the second half, just moments before the visitors hit the front.

And it was a goal worth waiting for as Barbosa controlled on his chest before unleashing a tremendous volley from a difficult angle that whizzed by Guillermo Ochoa in the Azulcrema net.

The game slipped further away from Las Águilas in the 78th minute when substitute Federico Viñas was dismissed for a kick in the face of Martín Nervo after a VAR review deemed there was enough intent to warrant a red card.

The striker had only replaced Henry Martín 13 minutes earlier.

La Academia wrapped up the three points in stoppage time when substitute Jonathan Herrera was afforded time and space to turn and finish from the edge of the area just seconds after being introduced.

América will have a fortnight to lick their wounds before they try to kickstart their 2022 Clausura campaign away at Atlético San Luis.
