Atlanta United midfielder Thiago Almada (21) is set to join Ligue 1 club Lyon in January 2025, according to a report this Sunday from L’Equipe. The Argentine international, who was part of the Albiceleste squad that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is expected to spend the first months of the 2024-2025 campaign at Brazilian outfit Botafogo – which is also owned by Eagle Football chief and Lyon president John Textor.
The outlet understands that the American executive has reached an agreement with Atlanta United over the signing of Thiago Almada. The total transfer package is expected to break the €23m mark as L’Equipe add that the transfer fee will amount to €19.6m with an additional €3.7m worth of add-ons. Thiago Almada will introduce himself to France next month as he has been called up by Argentina U-21 manager Javier Mascherano to play in the football tournament of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Lyon have been busy in this summer transfer window. The Ligue 1 club have confirmed the permanent transfer of Saïd Benrahma (28) from West Ham United and are set to sign Nottingham Forest centre-back Moussa Niakhaté (28) in a €31m move.
