Atlanta United have acquired two international roster slots for the remainder of the 2022 Major League Soccer season before the Secondary Transfer window opens on July 7.

The first slot comes from Nashville SC, in exchange for $175,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money and the Eastern Conference team’s natural third-round selection in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. The second roster position was the result of a deal with the Seattle Sounders for $175,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money.

Atlanta has been quite active before the transfer window officially opens. The deals come after the team completed two signings, bringing over Mexican defender Juan Jose Purata on loan from Tigres UANL and Mexican goalkeeper Raul Gudino on a free transfer after his contract with Chivas expired.

Head coach Gonzalo Pineda will be using the Secondary Transfer window to revamp the squad after injuries plague the current team. The backline is currently without trusted defender Miles Robinson, who remains out for the season with an Achilles tendon rupture, Andrew Gutman and Ronald Hernandez. Key components Osvaldo Alonso and Brad Guzan sit on the sidelines as well.

Star Josef Martinez also missed the beginning of the season after undergoing knee surgery. The turbulent start to the 2022 campaign has seen Atlanta slip to ninth place on the Eastern Conference table with 19 points in 14 games and a record of 5W-5L-4D.

With four months to go until the MLS postseason, Gonzalo Pineda must make a quick turnaround to inspire a top seven position and qualify for the playoffs.
