Manchester United are mulling over which players they could shift in order to raise funds for a midfield signing before deadline day.
Judging by this morning’s reports, it could well be a case of one in, one out, as Scott McTominay is garnering the most interest of any Red this summer.
Per The Athletic, United have set their asking price at £25 million for the 52-cap Scotland international. Other reports have already suggested that Fulham saw their two bids rebuffed as they fell below the club’s valuation, as they were believed to be around £15m and £20m.
It’s not just the Cottagers who are targeting McTominay, though, as the likes of Brentford, Everton, Galatasaray, and Fenerbache have all made enquiries, while Italian giants Napoli have recently added the 27-year-old to their shortlist.
As he is a Carrington graduate and, therefore, a homegrown product, McTominay’s sale would generate pure profit for United and create increased breathing space around the Premier League’s financial regulations.
He will, however, only make the move away from Old Trafford if it’s for the ‘right club’ – and Erik ten Hag certainly won’t be pushing him out the door. After a pre-season win over Rangers last month, the manager said of his trusty lieutenant: “We want to actually keep him [McTominay] because he’s a very important player for our squad.
“We’ve seen what he can contribute last season. When we had the sixes, he could play in a more advanced role. He’s a highly-interesting player for our team.”
