Athletic Club star Yuri Berchiche has admitted that he intends to issue a personal apology to Real Sociedad attacker Mikel Oyarzabal.
This comes owing to an incident between the pair during last weekend’s Basque Derby.
En route to a 1-0 victory for Athletic over their arch rivals, defender Yuri was at the heart of an ugly moment, involving the aforementioned Oyarzabal.
The exchange in question saw the former connect with La Real’s captain, by way of a heavy elbow.
Post-match, Yuri was heavily criticised for as much, with it having therefore come as little surprise when his actions were put to the Spaniard himself during a press conference on Wednesday.
And Yuri, to his credit, went on to admit his mistake, before confirming his plan to ‘ask for forgiveness’ from Oyarzabal when Athletic and Real Sociedad lock horns once more at Anoeta later in the season:
“You know what matters to me, nothing. They are incidents of the match and I have seen them… I was wrong, it was an argument between Mikel and me, I told him that I didn’t hit him, I was convinced that I hadn’t hit him, then I saw the images and it was clear that I hit him. These are actions that occur in a match in which the pulses are at full blast.
“When we play at Anoeta I will ask Mikel for forgiveness. As for the fans, they will know what they think, it doesn’t matter to me, it seems like nonsense, things happen on the pitch. I’m not going to say anything else.”
