Athletic Club captured their 24th Copa Del Rey with a 4-2 penalty victory over Mallorca after the game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Scorers:Â Sancet 50'; Rodriguez 21'
Like most finals tend to, the game started in cagey fashion with possession relatively even and chances at a premium.
Mallorca opened the scoring just after the 20-minute mark and it came via an almighty penalty box pinball. After several saves from Julen Agirrezabala and stops elsewhere, Dani RodrĂguez finally took aim and brilliantly placed the ball into the top corner to send his fans into a frenzy.
Athletic responded and thought they had equalised through Nico Williams but there was an offside in the build up.
They did level things up five minutes after the break and Williams was involved again, playing a lovely ball into Oihan Sancet, who expertly finished from inside the box.
With the swing in momentum, Athletic pushed for a second goal but could not find it as the game headed for extra-time.
In the added 30 minutes, both sides had efforts on goals with Athletic the ones truly pushing for the goal but, again, they could not find the goal, meaning it would be penalties that would decide the 122nd Copa del Rey final.
Athletic held their nerve in front of their own end, converting all four of their spotkicks, while Manu Morlanes and Nemanja Radonjic were the fall guys for Mallorca.
A dramatic ending to a dramatic night in Seville, and a first title in 40 years for the Basque club.
