Athletic Bilbao coach Marrcelino was delighted with Monday night's victory over Levante.

The Valencians proved tough to breakdown, with Mikel Vesga's opener coming in the 62nd minute. After that it was plain sailing with Iñaki Williams and Oier Zarraga putting the match to bed before Jorge de Frutos got a consolation goal for the visitors.

“I've experienced games like this before. You start to have doubts because, when you have several clear chances but don't score, you think it may not be your day," Marcelino said at his post-match press conference.

“The team kept going for it and we found the opener in the second half when we needed it most. From then on everything went our way and with the second goal we practically sealed the victory.

“It was important to win today and we've put ourselves in a very good position. After the Valencia game, to have an immediate reaction like this is pleasing. The team was able to bounce back after a bitter blow.

“We're in the fight for Europe. We have to be consistent, competitive and go into each game as if it were our last."

The boss was particularly happy with the Lions' defensive performance, applauding their ability to limit Levante to a handful of chances.

He said: “We were strong in defence against a side that can cause problems because they have very quick players. It's a shame we conceded a goal because I think it could've been avoided.

“But I'm happy we gave them few chances. We won duels, were organised and pressed well. In attack, I liked our patience, we kept the ball moving and finished off moves well.

“In general, I'm pleased. We have a good squad. As a coaching staff we're proud of the way they work, their effort and competitiveness. We have to focus on constantly improving and having the ambition to win every match, no matter who the opponents are."
