Athenea: “Playing for Real Madrid is an honour and a big responsibility" | OneFootball

Athenea is one of the madridistas at the World Cup, where she has given an interview to adidas providing an overview of her career: “Playing for Real Madrid is an honour and a big responsibility for me, as I'm a role model for so many people. You have to set an example both on the pitch and off it because Real Madrid gives you such visibility. My experience so far has been unbelievable. I have achieved a dream I had since I was a little girl and I feel privileged to be at the best club in the world."

Spanish national team “It's difficult to put into words because you have to experience it in order to understand how it feels to hear the anthem... it's incredible and makes me so proud. Taking part in my first World Cup has filled me with strength and motivation and I know this experience will teach me some valuable lessons that will have a positive impact on my professional development”.

Greatest achievements “One of the achievements I am proudest of is having played for Real Madrid in the Champions League. There is also the U-19s European Championships we won in Switzerland and my debut for the senior international side. I have experienced some good moments and some not so good but I have always learned from them. The difficult times have motivated me to keep fighting for my dreams, they are the situations that help you to grow."

Beginnings  “My first experience of playing football came at school with my classmates, I always had a ball with me ever since I was very young. My family's support was also hugely important, there was always a great passion for football in my household. They never got in my way and always supported me in going after my dream. I would encourage any young girls who want to play football to pursue their dreams. There will be good times and bad times but if you keep your determination and work hard, you can achieve anything you put your mind to."

Hard work “I try and focus on things I have to improve and at the same time, I keep working on my strengths in order to try and perfect them. I often stay behind after training to work on my crossing and shooting. I want to keep improving my acceleration and looking for good link-up around the box so I can help the team out more and more."
