On Sunday, January 31, 2020, the Gewiss Stadium hosts Atalanta vs Lazio in Matchday 20 of the 2020/21 Serie A.
In the 105 times that the two clubs have played each other in Serie A, the Biancocelesti have won on 29 occasions, the Nerazzurri have won on 36 occasions and there have been 40 draws. When playing at home, Atalanta has a record of 8W-22D-22L against Lazio.
As it stands in the top flight of Italian football, the Biancocelesti sit in seventh with a record of 10W-4D-5L (34 points) and the Nerazzurri sit in fifth with a record of 10W-6D-3L (36 points).
Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Ruggeri; Pessina, Ilicic; Zapata
Lazio (3-5-2): Reina; Musacchio, Acerbi, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Lucas Leiva, Luis Alberto, Marusic; Correa, Immobile
This will be the second meeting between Lazio and Atalanta this week at the Gewiss Stadium. Lazio lost 3-2 mid-week against Atalanta in the Quarter-Finals of the 2020/21 Coppa Italia in what was a disappointing result, as the Biancocelesti conceded and failed to capitalize while being up a man for the majority of the second half.
As a result of this loss, Lazio were knocked out of the Coppa Italia while Atalanta advanced to the semi-finals for the second time in the last three years. Therefore, the Biancocelesti will seek revenge in Serie A this upcoming Sunday in what should be another eventful match, as the two sides are separated by just two points in the standings.
Lazio received great news this past week as midfielder Luis Alberto returned to training after missing the past three matches due to emergency surgery to remove his appendix. The Spaniard was missed in the first meeting between these two sides and will be a massive boost for Lazio manager, Simone Inzaghi.
As for Gian Piero Gasperini and Atalanta, they will likely be without Mario Pasalic and Hans Hateboer due to injury, in addition to Robin Gosens, as he was suspended after accumulating his fifth yellow card in their recent Serie A fixture against AC Milan.
Lazio are winless in their past seven encounters against Atalanta in Serie A (three draws, four losses). In recent seasons, although Atalanta have been the more fortunate side, it is important to note that five of their past seven meetings have been decided by a goal or less.
If Lazio are to advance further and pass Atalanta in the standings, they will need to be highly motivated, not let their guard down and be much better defensively against an Atalanta side who have several proven goal scorers on their team.
